ISO 14001:2026
ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems. It sets out what an organisation needs to have in place to understand its effect on the environment, meet its compliance obligations and keep improving its environmental performance. ISO 14001:2026 is the current edition, replacing ISO 14001:2015.
What ISO 14001 is, and isn't
ISO 14001 doesn't set performance targets or tell you what your emissions or waste should be. It sets out a management system: a way of identifying what matters, controlling it, checking it and improving it. Two organisations in the same sector can both conform while performing very differently. What they share is a working system for managing their environmental impact.
The standard applies to any organisation, of any size and in any sector. Certification by an accredited certification body is optional, but it is often what customers and tender documents ask for.
How the standard is structured
ISO 14001 follows the Harmonized Structure that ISO uses for all its management system standards, so its clauses line up with ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and others:
- Clause 4, context: the issues, environmental conditions and interested parties that affect the system, and its scope.
- Clause 5, leadership: top management's commitment, the environmental policy, and roles and responsibilities.
- Clause 6, planning: environmental aspects, compliance obligations, risks and opportunities, and objectives.
- Clause 7, support: resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information.
- Clause 8, operation: operational control, including a life cycle perspective, and emergency preparedness and response.
- Clause 9, performance evaluation: monitoring, evaluation of compliance, internal audit and management review.
- Clause 10, improvement: nonconformity, corrective action and continual improvement.
Together these follow the plan, do, check, act cycle. For most organisations the core of the system is the environmental aspects register and the compliance obligations register, with the rest of the system built around controlling and improving what they identify.
What the 2026 edition means for you
The 2026 edition is a revision, not a rewrite. The clause structure above is unchanged, and an organisation with a well-run ISO 14001:2015 system has a sound base to work from. The revision brings the text into line with the current version of ISO's common structure and clarifies what's expected in several areas. One of them is the environmental conditions an organisation considers as part of its context, such as climate change, pollution, resource availability, biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Always work from the published text, not from summaries, including this one. Buy the standard from ISO or your national standards body, read the new edition against your current system, and record the differences you find.
Moving an existing system to ISO 14001:2026
For a certified organisation the transition usually runs like this:
- Get the standard and a gap analysis against the new edition.
- Review your context, especially the environmental conditions you considered and whether climate-related factors affect your system.
- Review the aspects register and the compliance obligations register in the light of that context.
- Update the documents that change, rather than rewriting the whole system.
- Brief the people affected, then run an internal audit and a management review that cover the changes.
- Arrange a transition audit with your certification body.
Certification bodies work to a transition period set through the accreditation system. Ask your certification body early for the dates that apply to you and when they can audit against the new edition.
