ISO 9001 Gap Analysis Tool

A gap analysis compares how your business works today with what ISO 9001 requires, and shows you what’s missing before a certification body finds it. It’s usually the first step when a customer or tender asks for ISO 9001, because it turns the standard into a list of specific jobs.

This free tool is a self-assessment version of that exercise. It asks 50 plain-English questions, grouped by the seven clauses of ISO 9001 you can be audited against: context of the organisation, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. Answer Yes, Partly or No to each, based on how things are today rather than how you plan them to be, and you get a scored readiness report straight away. It shows your overall readiness, a score for each clause so you can see where the work is, and your biggest gaps, restated as actions and ordered by audit risk. Each question has a one-line note on what it means in practice for a small business. Skip anything you’re unsure of: unanswered questions count against your score, but they’re listed separately so the result stays honest.

The questions check whether the things an auditor will ask for are in place: a written scope and quality policy, measurable objectives, controlled documents, supplier approval, internal audits, management review, corrective action and the records behind them. They are based on the gap analysis checklist in our ISO 9001 pack and follow ISO 9001:2026, the current edition. For a deeper look at the method, read our gap analysis guides.

This tool covers the whole standard, which is what you want when you are building a system or checking one end to end. If you already run a certified ISO 9001:2015 system and only need to know what the new edition changes for you, our ISO 9001:2026 transition readiness check is the shorter route: it asks only about the requirements the 2026 edition adds, strengthens or clarifies, and scores them by topic.

A self-assessment can’t replace an audit, and your result says so. But it will tell you honestly how far you have to go, and where to start.

Questions about the gap analysis tool

How long does the gap analysis take?

About ten minutes. There are 50 questions across the seven auditable clauses of ISO 9001, each answered Yes, Partly or No. Your progress is saved on your device as you go, so you can close the page and come back later.

Is this a real ISO 9001 audit?

No. It's a self-assessment based on your own answers. It checks whether the documented information and processes ISO 9001 asks for are in place, but it can't check whether they work in practice. A certification body audits evidence: your records, documents and how people actually work. Use the result to plan your work and prepare for an audit, not as a substitute for one.

Are my answers stored or sent anywhere?

No. The assessment and the scoring run entirely in your browser. Your answers are saved only on your own device, in your browser's local storage, so a refresh doesn't lose your progress, and you can clear them with Start again. They're never sent to us or to anyone else. If you choose to share your result, the answers travel inside the link you share, in the part of the web address that browsers never send to a server.

Which edition of ISO 9001 does it cover?

ISO 9001:2026, the current edition. The questions were rebuilt against it, including the requirements it adds around quality culture and ethical behaviour, opportunities as something separate from risks, change planning, organisational knowledge and audit objectives. Climate change is still there too: it moved into the main text of clause 4.1 rather than sitting in a separate amendment. If your system was built to ISO 9001:2015 you will see those newer requirements appear as gaps, which is what you want.

Do I need to give my email address to see the result?

No. You see your full scored result, clause by clause, as soon as you finish, with no email, account or signup. There's an optional PDF action plan if you want one, and only that asks for an email address.
